From June 3–5, 2025, the 21st edition of the AZTI Summer School took place at the Aquarium of San Sebastián, Spain. This year’s theme—“Artificial Intelligence and Citizen Science in Monitoring and Assessing Biodiversity and Invasive Species at Sea”—brought together researchers, policy-makers, and marine managers to explore how AI tools and public engagement can support ocean biodiversity monitoring.
Supported by six Horizon Europe projects, including POMP, the course featured three days of expert-led sessions, workshops, and discussions on methods for detecting biodiversity patterns and identifying marine invasive species. Participants explored the role of artificial intelligence in automating species identification, and the value of citizen science platforms in gathering large-scale observational data.
POMP’s inclusion among the supporting initiatives highlights its alignment with the School’s goals—especially in advancing cutting edge approaches to track changes in marine biodiversity and supporting management of carbon-rich ecosystems in polar regions.
