Dr. David Barnes from the British Antarctic Survey, a partner in the POMP project, spoke at the recent MPAinMSP conference about the role of polar regions in tackling climate change and biodiversity loss.
In his talk, “Importance of polar seas protection to climate change and nature-loss crises,” he pointed out that marine areas are currently protected at half the rate of land, and only a small share includes carbon-rich habitats. He called for faster and more targeted efforts to protect these areas, especially in the context of the global “30 by 30” target.
Polar seas, while remote, play a major role in absorbing and storing carbon. Protecting them helps address both rising emissions and declining biodiversity. According to Dr. Barnes, the most effective nature-based solutions are those that protect largely intact ecosystems, involve local communities, and secure long-term benefits.
The MPAinMSP conference brought together researchers, policymakers, and planners to discuss the latest developments in marine conservation, blue carbon science, and spatial planning. Dr. Barnes’ talk linked polar science to global strategies for more effective marine protection.
