Join the POMP Project: New Opening for a Remote Sensing Scientist in Greenland

The Greenland Climate Research Centre, part of the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources, is happy to announce a unique opportunity for a Researcher/Data Scientist to join the POMP project. This 24-month position is focused on creating comprehensive maps of current and emerging coastal polar blue carbon habitats in both the Arctic and Antarctic regions.

With marine ice retreating, new valuable habitats are expected to emerge, potentially capturing significant amounts of atmospheric CO2. However, there is currently a significant gap in our understanding of the precise locations and carbon storage capabilities of these habitats. The POMP project, an EU-Horizon funded interdisciplinary project aims to bridge this gap and explore in depth the role of polar ocean habitats in climate change mitigation

The successful candidate will employ a remote sensing approach, integrating satellite imagery with existing data to map and analyse habitats like fjords, macroalgal forests, saltmarshes, and seagrass meadows. The role may also involve fieldwork in Arctic locations and participation in annual research cruises around Greenland.

We are looking for an enthusiastic individual with:

  • A Master’s degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline.
  • Strong computing and programming skills, including experience with GIS software and coding in R/Python.
  • Experience in handling large datasets and conducting spatial modelling.

This position is based in Nuuk, Greenland, offering an engaging scientific community and extensive research facilities. The role also offers a competitive salary, aligned with the Greenland government’s academic salary agreement, and the chance to work with leading institutions like the British Antarctic Survey and the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research.

Start your journey with us in early 2025 and contribute to groundbreaking research that has the potential to reshape our understanding of climate change mitigation through marine ecosystems.
