With marine ice retreating, new valuable habitats are expected to emerge, potentially capturing significant amounts of atmospheric CO2. However, there is currently a significant gap in our understanding of the precise locations and carbon storage capabilities of these habitats. The POMP project, an EU-Horizon funded interdisciplinary project aims to bridge this gap and explore in depth the role of polar ocean habitats in climate change mitigation 

The successful candidate will employ a remote sensing approach, integrating satellite imagery with existing data to map and analyse habitats like fjords, macroalgal forests, saltmarshes, and seagrass meadows. The role may also involve fieldwork in Arctic locations and participation in annual research cruises around Greenland. 

We are looking for an enthusiastic individual with: 

• A Master’s degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline. 

• Strong computing and programming skills, including experience with GIS software and coding in R/Python. 

• Experience in handling large datasets and conducting spatial modelling.

The selected candidate will contribute to the development of the REcoM biogeochemical model and interpret model simulations to assess shifts in marine ecosystems. The second opportunity is associated with the ERC project OceanPeak and focuses on the historical and future coastal ocean carbon sink. Responsibilities include developing and tuning a new seamless coastal setup and analysing the resulting model simulations.
